Climate
With environments from steaming tropical jungles to the lofty heights of the Himalayas, the temperatures and weather in Nepal can vary widely depending on where and when you go. Nepal has four main seasons centered around the summer monsoon. The majority of visitors come to Nepal in either the pre or post monsoon period.
For those focused on mountain adventures, climbing and trekking, the two main times to visit are pre or post monsoon. Mountain visibility is generally better in Autumn (post monsoon), but snow/wind conditions in pre monsoon often mean this is a prioritized time for high mountain ascents.
Pre Monsoon
Late March to early June. Can have very hot weather (especially in May) in the lower altitudes including afternoon cloud build-up and rain showers. However, the high mountains are fantastic to visit at this time. Go higher where the temperatures are more tolerable.
Post Monsoon
Late September to late November. Excellent mountain views and warm days until December, with high-season crowds. The weather is generally clear and dry, with milder temperatures in both the high mountains and the Terai plains. The most popular time for trekking.
Summer Monsoon
June to September. Characterized by hot days and frequent monsoon showers. Mountain views during this time are limited, and roads and paths may be blocked by landslides, with the potential for flights to be canceled. The monsoon is welcomed by the locals as it creates growth in plant life and is a festive time for celebration in the Kathmandu Valley.
Winter
December and January. Generally cold, clear, and stable. It doesn’t snow in Kathmandu, but the entire Kathmandu Valley can be cold and damp – particularly overnight and in the mornings. Lodge owners in trekking areas generally shut up shop altogether over this period.
Spring
February to March. A secondary tourist season, with warmer weather and longer days. Rhododendrons are in full bloom in the hills towards the end of March, and this is a great time to visit the Terai for viewing wildlife – despite the increasing heat. The downsides are that haze can obscure the mountains from lower elevations (though it’s usually possible to trek above it).
The low-land plains of the Terai can have tropical temperatures throughout the year. The Himalayas can get to sub-zero temperatures in winter, and even low temperatures within the main trekking seasons (particularly overnight). However, the sun's heat can bring some warmth during the day, even in the mountains. The temperature of Kathmandu goes below 1°C (34°F) in winter and rises to an average of 25°C (77°F) in summer.
The average temperature in the Kathmandu Valley during the four seasons:
- Spring season ranges between 16-23°C (61-73°F)
- Summer season ranges between 23-25°C (73-77°F)
- Autumn season ranges between 15-24°C (59-75°F)
- Winter season ranges between 9-12°C (48-54°F)
Best Time To Travel
- Peak travel time for trekking is Post Monsoon: Late September to late November and Pre Monsoon: Late March to early June.
- An Everest climb is generally undertaken in Pre Monsoon.
- Other climbing peaks and expedition trips visit in either the pre or post monsoon period.
- June-September for festivals and Nepali culture at its most animated.
- February-March can be an exciting time to visit with low crowds and Spring in all its glory.
- For Kathmandu Valley adventures, most times throughout the year are suitable for these activities.
